Why register a UK marriage in Turkey

Here is how to register a UK marriage certificate in Turkey: get the full certificate, apostilled, with a sworn Turkish translation. Then apply to the Turkish civil registry, either at a Turkish consulate in the UK or in Turkey. A family lawyer in Turkey can file the application for you if you cannot travel.

A marriage that takes place in the UK is valid under UK law. However, it does not automatically appear on the Turkish civil registry. This is not the same as getting married in Turkey. Your marriage already exists, and registration simply records it.

The registry is kept by the Turkish population directorate (Nufus Mudurlugu). Each district has its own population directorate, and that office receives your registration file. You may also hear of the marriage office (evlendirme memurlugu). That is a separate office, run by the local municipality, which conducts weddings in Turkey. It does not register a marriage that took place in the UK. This guide therefore refers to the population directorate throughout.

Registration ensures that your marital status is recognised by Turkish authorities. This matters for inheritance, property and citizenship applications, and for any future divorce proceedings in Turkey. Without registration, Turkish authorities may not treat you as married. The process is administrative, but it requires specific documents, and each document must meet Turkish legal requirements. If inheritance is your main concern, you may also want to read is a UK will valid in Turkey.

British nationals often assume the British embassy handles registration, but the embassy does not register marriages on the Turkish civil registry. The embassy and the British consulate in Turkey can issue some supporting documents. Check the GOV.UK guidance on marriage abroad for the current position. The actual registration happens in Turkey or at a Turkish consulate in the UK.

You should start the process as soon as possible after the wedding. Delays can create complications with Turkish bureaucracy. A Turkish lawyer can manage the process on your behalf, which avoids the need for you to travel to Turkey multiple times.

Documents needed for registration

The core document is the original UK marriage certificate, and it must be a full certificate, not a short version. The certificate must be legalised with an apostille issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. This confirms the signature of the UK registrar. You can apply through the GOV.UK document legalisation service. The apostille certificate must be attached to the marriage certificate, and both documents must then be translated into Turkish. The translation must be done by a sworn translator in Turkey, because a UK translation is not accepted by Turkish authorities.

You also need copies of both passports. The Turkish national needs a valid Turkish identity card, and the British national needs a valid British passport. If either spouse was married before, you may need a final divorce decree or a death certificate of a former spouse. These documents also need apostilles and sworn translations. The Turkish authority may ask for a birth certificate for each spouse. Check the exact list with the relevant population directorate before you begin.

The role of the Turkish consulate in the UK

You can submit your application at a Turkish consulate in the UK. The consulate in London is the busiest, and there are also consulates in Edinburgh and Manchester. The consulate acts as a receiving office and forwards your file to the relevant population directorate in Turkey. It does not make the final decision. It checks that the file is complete and verifies the apostilles and the translations. On this route, have a sworn translator in Turkey translate your apostilled documents before the appointment, directly or through a lawyer. An incomplete file will be returned, which causes significant delay.

Appointments at the consulate can be limited, so you should book well in advance. You must attend in person unless you appoint a proxy. A proxy requires a power of attorney drafted under Turkish law. The power of attorney must be notarised and apostilled in the UK, then translated by a sworn translator in Turkey. Canko Law Firm can prepare this power of attorney for you. We can also attend the consulate on your behalf. This saves you time and reduces the risk of errors.

Applying through the population directorate in Turkey

If you are in Turkey, you can apply directly to the district population directorate. The Turkish spouse must be registered in that district. If the Turkish spouse has moved, the file is handled by the district where they are currently registered. So check their address registration first. You submit the original documents and the translations, and the officer checks the file. They may ask for additional documents.

The section on what each spouse receives after registration, below, covers the identity card, the marriage booklet and the foreigner identity number.

Consulate route or population directorate route: which to choose

There are two main ways to file. You can apply at a Turkish consulate in the UK, or in Turkey at the district population directorate. Both routes lead to the same result, because the Turkish marriage record is added to the civil registry either way. The difference lies in where you live, which papers you hold and how much travel you can manage.

Our view is simple: use the consulate if you live in the UK and your file is complete. If you cannot attend, or your case has complications, filing in Turkey through a lawyer is often the more practical choice. The signs below point to each route.

The consulate route suits couples who live in the UK and can attend an appointment. Choose it if these also apply:

  • your apostilles and sworn translations are complete before you book;

  • neither of you was married before, so there are no divorce or death papers to add;

  • your names match on your UK and Turkish records.

You stay close to home and can answer questions about the file face to face. The consulate checks the file and sends it to Turkey, so the decision is still made by the population directorate there. If the file comes back incomplete, you may need to book a new appointment and wait again.

The population directorate route suits couples who are already in Turkey, or who have a lawyer there. Choose it if these also apply:

  • you hold the original apostilled documents and their sworn translations;

  • you will be in Turkey long enough to answer any questions the officer raises.

The officer sees the original documents directly and can raise questions on the spot. Small problems can often be dealt with at the counter rather than by post. The district where the Turkish spouse is registered decides which office deals with the file.

A lawyer filing in Turkey under a power of attorney suits couples in other situations. Choose it if any of these apply:

  • you cannot travel to Turkey and cannot attend a consulate appointment;

  • consulate appointments near you are hard to get;

  • either of you was married before, or your names differ between UK and Turkish records.

Some couples combine the routes. They prepare the apostilles and the power of attorney in the UK, then let a lawyer file the papers in Turkey. Whichever route you choose, the core documents are the same. Do not book a consulate appointment until the file is complete, because a returned file means starting again. Take advice on which office covers your case before you book anything.

What each spouse receives after registration

Registration produces different results for each spouse, so it helps to know what to expect. For the Turkish spouse, the civil registry entry changes from single to married. They receive a new identity card showing that status, and the marriage booklet (Evlenme Cuzdani) records the marriage for the couple.

The British spouse does not receive a Turkish identity card. Instead, they are recorded in the Turkish spouse's civil registry entry as their husband or wife. If they do not already have a foreigner identity number, they can apply for one. Many offices in Turkey ask for this number, so it is worth obtaining early.

Either spouse can then request the multilingual extract known as Form B. This is useful when another country asks for proof of the Turkish marriage record. It is often accepted abroad, but check with the authority that asks for it. Keep in mind that the original UK certificate remains your main proof of marriage in the UK.

The registered marriage can also support other applications. For example, the British spouse may rely on it when applying for a family residence permit in Turkey. Turkish citizenship by marriage has its own conditions, so take advice before you apply.

Registration does not change your UK marital status or your UK documents. It does not create a new marriage. It simply makes Turkish authorities aware of the marriage you already have.

How to register a UK marriage certificate in Turkey through a lawyer

Many couples cannot travel, so they ask how to register a UK marriage certificate in Turkey without leaving the UK. A lawyer in Turkey can file the application and follow it up under a power of attorney. The power of attorney gives the lawyer authority to act, and it must be drafted to Turkish standards.

First, the lawyer drafts the document in Turkish and English, listing every task they may carry out. Next, you sign it before a notary public in the UK. Then the notarised document receives an apostille from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

After that, you send the original to Turkey. There, a sworn translator translates it, and a Turkish notary certifies the translation. The lawyer then gathers your apostilled marriage certificate and other papers and arranges their sworn translations. Finally, the lawyer files the application and follows up with the population directorate until the registry is updated.

You can also sign the power of attorney at a Turkish consulate in the UK. The consulate can act as a notary for Turkish purposes. A power of attorney made there is prepared in Turkish by a Turkish official. It therefore does not need an apostille or a sworn translation. Consulate notarial appointments can be limited too.

Make sure the power of attorney covers every step, including collecting documents and correcting errors. A narrow power may force you to sign a new one part way through. Keep a copy of everything you sign and send. A lawyer cannot promise a result, because the population directorate makes the decision. For how we charge for this work, read our fees.

What happens after submission

Once the file is accepted, the population directorate updates the civil registry electronically, and the marriage appears on the Turkish national database. You can then request Form B, the multilingual extract described under what each spouse receives after registration. You should keep the original UK marriage certificate safe, as you may need it for future UK matters. The Turkish registration does not replace the UK certificate. Both documents exist in parallel.

If there is a discrepancy in names, the Turkish authority will register the name as it appears on the Turkish identity card. The British spouse may need a name change deed poll if they want the Turkish registry to match a new UK name. This is a separate process. You should discuss name alignment with a lawyer before you submit the file. Correcting the registry later is possible, but it takes longer and requires a court application in Turkey.

Common issues and delays

Missing apostilles are the most common cause of rejection. The UK apostille must be on the original certificate, because a copy apostille is not accepted. Translations by non sworn translators are rejected. The sworn translator must be registered with a Turkish notary, so a UK based translator cannot swear the translation for Turkish use. Incomplete divorce paperwork also causes delays. The Turkish authority requires the final decree absolute, and a decree nisi is not sufficient. A death certificate of a former spouse must also be apostilled and translated.

The Turkish spouse must have a valid address registration in Turkey. If the address is not current, the file may be sent to the wrong district. This delays the process. The British national does not need to be in Turkey. A properly drafted power of attorney allows a lawyer to act fully. We check the requirements of the relevant population directorate before filing. We check files for the common errors that cause rejection.

When to take advice

The detail of how to register a UK marriage certificate in Turkey depends on your papers and your district. Take advice before you gather documents, because requirements vary slightly between population directorates. A lawyer can confirm the exact list for your district. Advice is especially useful in these situations:

  • you have been married before, as the divorce or death documents must meet strict standards;

  • there is any difference between your names on UK and Turkish records;

  • you cannot attend the consulate or the population directorate in person. A power of attorney must then be drafted correctly or it will be rejected;

  • a long time has passed since the wedding, as a limit applies to reporting a marriage abroad.

Common questions

Can I register the marriage by post?

No, you must attend in person or appoint a proxy with a valid Turkish power of attorney.

Do I need a Turkish lawyer?

You can do it yourself, but a Turkish lawyer helps you avoid errors and can act as your proxy.

What if my UK certificate is lost?

You must order a replacement from the UK General Register Office before you start.

Will the registration affect my UK status?

No, the registration only updates the Turkish civil registry and does not change your UK marital status.

Do we need a medical report?

No. A medical report is needed to marry in Turkey, but not for marriage registration of a wedding already held in the UK.

We married in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Is the process different?

The steps are the same. Then you get the apostille from the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.

Can we still register if we married years ago?

In general, an older marriage can still be registered. Turkish law sets a limit for reporting a marriage abroad, and late reporting may bring an administrative fine, so take advice first.
